Although initially scheduled for May 29, 2020, Godzilla Vs. Kong had a rocky development and had to be postponed many times before finally being released on May 21, 2021. On March 26, 2021, the film was rescheduled for release before being shown to American cinemas on March 31, 2021. Additionally, the film was available on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.

The film is directed by Adam Wingard, produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Eric McLeod, and Brian Rogers, and has a screenplay by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, based on a scenario by Terry Rossio, Michael Dougherty, and Zach Shields. In addition to King of the Monsters, Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on it. King of Monsters ends with Godzilla and Kong engaged in a massive fight five years later following Ghidorah's rampage.

With the destiny of the planet at stake, "Godzilla vs. Kong" brings together two legendary enemies. A treacherous trip leads Kong and his guards to Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom Kong has built an unbreakable connection of love and loyalty. In the path of an infuriated Godzilla, they find themselves. It is simply the start of the enigma that lurks deep below the Earth's core.

For a strong energy source, Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons employs Nathan Lind, a former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist. Nathan is cautious at first since his brother attempted to investigate the Hollow Earth and was killed by an anti-gravity field within the tunnel. Walter says Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, customized aircraft capable of withstanding the gravity field's pressure.

They are joined by an Apex crew led by Walter's daughter Maia aboard a modified boat where a moderately drugged Kong has been locked up. In the middle of the night, Kong becomes restless and nervous, but Jia calms him down by instructing her and Kong to hold their fingers together in solidarity as Kong signs the word "home" for Ilene. On the next day, Ilene tells Nathan about raising Jia as her own when fierce and unpredictable storms killed most of the Iwi and her parents. Jia was the only survivor since Kong defended her, which resulted in them developing a bond.

With no other option, Nathan disables all of the ships' powers in order to fool Godzilla into thinking he destroyed them and Kong was defeated. After seeing the shattered fleet, he swims away, delighted with his win. The team chooses to fly Kong to an Antarctica entry point for the Hollow Earth, where Godzilla was first frozen, as they prepare to reactivate the ships. Jia explains to Kong that his home is beyond the door, but he refuses to enter.

Ren Serizawa, the son of Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, is in charge of Apex's ultimate weapon, "Mechagodzilla" a mechanical Godzilla. As soon as Mechagodzilla is up and running, Walter sends in a massive adult Skullcrawler dubbed "Number 10" to see how well it can take on the titans. Mechagodzilla grips and restrains the Skullcrawler as it nears Madison, Josh, and Bernie, before cleaving it in two with a massive red energy beam. Mecha shuts down as a consequence of being limited by the power source.

It looks like Skull Island inside the Hollow Earth. They are walking through the countryside when they are attacked by a pair of Warbats. One of them destroys one of the HEAVs, but the other doesn't. When the first Warbat was killed, Kong swung its body into the second one, which knocked it out, but the creature came back and wrapped itself around him. This gives Kong a chance to get away from the Warbat. The creature is then hit with missiles from Nathan's team in their HEAV, giving Kong a chance to break free and beat the Warbat to death before eating its internal parts.

Godzilla can't fly, which is a good thing. Maia and her crew attempt to leave their HEAV, but Kong snatches it on their way out and crushes it in his hand, killing Maia and her crew inside.

Godzilla searches for Kong, who hides from the Titan by perching himself atop a tower. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above, placing the Titan in a chokehold with the intent of strangling him, only for Godzilla to break free and unleash his full fury on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slashing Kong with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong trying to force Godzilla off of him by punching his wounded thigh. Godzilla, who has Kong subdued and pinned down, roars angrily at his foe in a show of dominance, but Kong, who has been defeated, roars angrily in defiance.

It seems that Godzilla is inspired with Kong's strength, and so spares his rival's life before walking away, leaving Kong wounded but still alive, and ultimately losing consciousness.

Mechagodzilla, unaware that Walter's back is turned as he rants about his invention, goes crazy under the influence of both the energy source and Ghidorah's brain networks, murdering Walter with a sweep of its palm and electrocuting Ren. Mechagodzilla, now possessed by Ghidorah's mind, escapes the Apex facility under Victoria Peak Mountain and rampages over the city before being confronted by Godzilla. When Mechagodzilla comes into touch with Godzilla, it launches a volley of missiles at its biological counterpart before engaging in combat.

While Josh and Bernie fail to remotely disable the rampaging robot, and Madison calls for aid from Mark, Godzilla and Mechagodzilla fight, each firing their energy beams at each other, locking together, only for Mechagodzilla to win, knocking Godzilla down and burning him. The trio approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notices his pulse decreasing. They can't produce a big enough charge to restart Kong's heart, but Nathan remembers Maia's earlier comment about the HEAVs producing enough power to power Las Vegas for a week, so he flies the remaining HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and releasing a huge electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.

After waking up, Kong sees the fight between Godzilla and Mechagodzilla before encountering Jia, who attempts to persuade Kong that Godzilla isn't truly his opponent. Though Kong first does not believe her as he continues to witness Godzilla being annihilated by Mechagodzilla, Jia eventually convinces him that the robot is the "real" adversary, not Godzilla. After a brief moment of hesitation, Kong agrees and sets aside his animosity before marching into combat to assist Godzilla while repairing his dislocated arm.

Godzilla sees Kong holding his axe and supercharges it with his atomic breath, enabling Kong to dismember Mechagodzilla limb from limb and take its head off before holding up his prize and resting.

Madison re-introduces Mark to Josh and Bernie, who are delighted to see Mark and invite him into his program to discuss the Monarch facility in Roswell. Godzilla appears out of nowhere, prompting Kong to pick up his axe and continue the fight. Godzilla does not attack, instead staring Kong down. Kong lowers his axe, thereby ending the war between his and Godzilla's species. Godzilla and Kong are now on equal footing, and Godzilla returns to the water calmly, with Kong and everyone else observing.

Sometime later, Monarch have created an observation post in the Hollow Earth. One day, Ilene, Nathan and Jia watch as Kong passes by on his morning walk. After signing "home" to Jia, Kong swings onto a cliff, pounds his chest and roars, declaring himself as the king of the Hollow Earth and happily embracing it as his new home and kingdom.
